Mixing Glass Fibers and Fimo
Introduction: On this page I will explain how to mix the glass fibers in the Fimo. Be careful not to inhale the glass fibers You can make a host of colors using this Fimo mixing chart. Click on chart for enlargement. .pdf format My first lamps were made with hand mixed fimo and glass fibers. It takes a little bit of time to get it evenly distributed and the glass fibers will prick your fingers a little, but it is doable. Since I was going to make more than one lamp to develop the whole manufacturing process, I had to have a better way to mix the Fimo with the glass fibers faster and more efficient. When using a meat grinder or pasta maker, make sure that they are all clean or else your Fimo will come out with dirt spots and streaks. If you are only making one lamp write me and see if I have pre-mixed Fimo, or mix it by hand. It takes time to clean the meat grinder and for a small batch it is not worth it. If you are going to mix colors, you can add the a bit more glass fibers to the color with the majority of material, and then mix new Fimo of the other color with the mixed Fimo using the pasta maker. Fimo with a ratio of 8 milliliters/28 grams of Fimo leaves a better surface finish, but will also be a bit weaker. To mix colors with a pasta maker, you need to cycle the material through it at least 20 times to get a thorough mix.
